Individuals can participate in community science efforts through two distinct roles after registering for an account: submitting incidental sightings or conducting formal surveys. The incidental sighting role is designed for casual, everyday observations. If a participant happens to spot a firefly while hiking, relaxing in a yard, or engaging in other outdoor activities, they can simply snap a photograph and submit their observation (Firefly Atlas, 2026). This reporting process is straightforward, requiring only basic details such as the location, the time of day or night, and a brief description of the habitat.   The common eastern firefly ( Photinus pyralis ) is the most familiar firefly species illuminating summer nights in Front Royal, Virginia, and across the eastern United States (Bzdyk, 2017). Despite their name, fireflies are actually winged beetles belonging to the family Lampyridae (Northern Virginia Bird Alliance, 2024). In terms of natural history, P. pyralis spends up to two years as a flightless, bioluminescent larva—often called a "glowworm"—living in damp soil and leaf litter where they voraciously hunt soft-bodied prey like snails, slugs, and earthworms (Bzdyk, 2017; Northern Virginia Bird Alliance, 2024). After pupating underground, the adults emerge to live for just 30 days, utilizing this brief period strictly for mating (Bzdyk, 2017).   The Firefly Atlas is a comprehensive, collaborative initiative specifically organized to map and conserve the biological diversity of fireflies across North America (Firefly Atlas, 2026). At the helm of this study is the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, a science-based non-profit organization that manages the initiative's primary framework and infrastructure (Firefly Atlas, 2026). To effectively implement the project, the Xerces Society operates in close partnership with the New Mexico BioPark Society and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Species Survival Commission (SSC) Firefly Specialist Group (Firefly Atlas, 2026). The Firefly Atlas is a collaborative citizen science initiative designed to better understand and conserve the ecological diversity of fireflies throughout North America (Firefly Atlas, n.d.). Launched in 2022, the project's primary scientific objectives are to map and analyze species' geographic distributions, monitor their phenological timelines (such as seasonal emergence and flashing patterns), and determine critical habitat associations (Firefly Atlas, n.d.; Lewis et al., 2024). Additionally, the initiative focuses on identifying and assessing major threats putting these populations at risk, such as habitat loss and light pollution (Firefly Atlas, n.d.; Lewis et al., 2024).
